HANDBRAKE ON? WHAT EXACTLY DOES JERMAIN DEFOE MEAN BY EZE'S RESTRICTED STYLE OF PLAY?

Jermain Defoe slams £67.5m Eberechi Eze after Arsenal’s 1-1 draw at Brentford. Discover why the title race just got a lot tighter.

Handbrake On? What exactly does Jermain Defoe mean by Eze's restricted style of play?
Jermain Defoe Slams Eze

Jermain Defoe didn’t hold back after Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Brentford on Thursday. He called out Eberechi Eze, who just couldn’t get going in the game. Arsenal now sit four points ahead of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League, but this result wasn’t what they wanted. Noni Madueke put Arsenal ahead with a header in the second half, but Keane Lewis-Potter levelled it for Brentford at their place.

Eze, who cost Arsenal £67.5 million over the summer, looked off the pace. He barely left a mark on the match, and Arteta pulled him off at halftime for Martin Odegaard. Since leaving Crystal Palace, Eze hasn’t nailed down a starting spot under Arteta. Defoe summed it up: Eze is “playing with the handbrake on.”

Asked if Arsenal’s performance felt out of character, Defoe said, “Yeah, I think so. It’s the pressure. But honestly, Brentford’s a tough place. When you go there, you know it won’t be easy, but you have to try and make it look easy. You’ve got to cut out mistakes and keep your focus high. Arsenal didn’t really do that. Brentford were better after the break, and I think Arsenal wasted the first half. Eze just wasn’t good enough. I get that he hasn’t played much and maybe isn’t match fit, but you still expect more from him. Arsenal felt different tonight, and I think that’s all about mentality.”

Theo Walcott, who used to play for Arsenal, agreed that Arteta won’t be happy with how things went. Walcott said, “After seeing Man City get the points the day before, there’s always that pressure; you’ve got to get the job done. It’s still in Arsenal’s hands, though. They’ve got plenty of games to close the gap if they need to. Everyone’s already eyeing that game when Arsenal faces City. But Arteta won’t be happy. Not with that. He’ll have issues with a lot of players tonight because they just looked off.”

TUDOR IN: IGOR TUDOR AGREES TO LEAD SPURS AS INTERIM MANAGER UNTIL JUNE

Igor Tudor is the new Tottenham interim manager! Discover how this move helps Mauricio Pochettino's potential summer 2026 return.

Tudor’s aggressive style differs from Thomas Frank’s unsuccessful tenure

Tottenham has an agreement with Igor Tudor to be the interim manager until the season ends, which could make it easier for Mauricio Pochettino to come back this summer.

The club chose Tudor after looking at Edin Terzic, the former Borussia Dortmund manager, and Marco Rose, the former RB Leipzig manager. Tudor, who used to play for Croatia, hasn't worked since he left Juventus in October after the team didn't win for eight games.

Spurs are struggling to stay in the Premier League after a bad streak. They've been checking candidates since firing Thomas Frank this week. They didn't want someone long-term, just someone who could help quickly. Tudor's past seems to fit what they need. He used to defend for Juventus and has managed Hajduk Split, Paok, Karabukspor, Galatasaray, Udinese, Verona, and Marseille, plus a short time with Lazio.

Hiring an interim suggests Spurs want to keep the spot open for Pochettino if he wants to return. Pochettino was great in N17 for five years before leaving in November 2019. Now, he's busy coaching the US at this summer's World Cup.

But Pochettino might be free after the tournament and has thought about coming back to Spurs before. Fans still love him. They were chanting his name during Frank's last game, when they lost 2-1 to Newcastle at home on Tuesday. It looks like Spurs fans won't mind that Pochettino coached Chelsea in 2023-24.

Nothing is certain, and Spurs will need a backup plan. Because they wanted an interim, they didn't pick Roberto De Zerbi, who wants to rest after leaving Marseille this week. But he might be a candidate this summer. Spurs have also been connected to Andoni Iraola from Bournemouth, Oliver Glasner from Crystal Palace, and Marco Silva from Fulham.

If Tudor does well, he could get the job permanently. The 47-year-old needs to get Spurs out of danger. They're five points above the bottom three before playing Arsenal next Sunday in Tudor's first game. The team is off until Monday since they were knocked out of the FA Cup last month, but their new manager will be ready when they get back.

Spurs hope Tudor can improve the mood in the locker room and calm the fans. Frank had trouble winning over fans and players before he left after eight months. Home games have been tense.

Tudor will have many injured players to deal with. Frank, who left after only two wins in 17 league games, couldn't use James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski this season due to injuries. Mohammed Kudus and Richarlison are also out, and Wilson Odobert hurt his knee badly this week. Cristian Romero, the captain, has criticised the Spurs leaders and is suspended for four games after getting a red card in last weekend's 2-0 loss to Manchester United.

Talks with Tudor happened fast. Terzic is interested in a permanent job and might go to La Liga this summer. Robbie Keane, a former Spurs player, didn't want to leave his job as the Ferencváros manager to be a caretaker.

GLASNER FUMES: PALACE BOSS SILENCES TOTTENHAM RUMORS AFTER SHOCKING BURNLEY COLLAPSE

Oliver Glasner refuses to comment on the Tottenham job. Discover the latest on the Crystal Palace manager's 2026 summer exit plans.

Glasner refuses to discuss Spurs move after Crystal Palace loss

Oliver Glasner wasn't happy when asked about reports connecting him to the Tottenham Hotspur job.

The 51-year-old Glasner is a possible replacement for Thomas Frank, who was recently let go. The Crystal Palace boss has also been mentioned in connection with the Manchester United job, and those rumours grew louder when he said he'd leave Selhurst Park when the season ends.

Right now, the Austrian plans to stay where he is until the end of the season. Even though he's made that clear, he keeps getting questions about stories that link him to other jobs.

The rumours linking him to Tottenham are getting louder. A pair of goals from January signing Jorgen Strand Larsen seemed to have the Eagles on track for a second win in a row.

But in a wild eight-minute stretch, Hannibal Mejbri and Jaidon Anthony scored for the Clarets before Jefferson Lerma scored an own goal just before halftime.

Palace couldn't recover from their first-half collapse and lost the game. At the post-match press conference, one reporter bravely asked Glasner about the Tottenham job.

Instead of scolding the reporter, Glasner just gave him a stern look and shook his head. Then, he didn't answer the question about the Spurs job.

Considering how Palace let their lead slip against Scott Parker's team, the question seemed to irritate him. Palace is currently 13th in the league with 32 points, a big drop considering they were in the European spots before Christmas.

While he didn't want to talk about the Spurs job, he did answer a question about whether his decision to leave at the end of the season was affecting his players. He said, "I won't question their character." I say it all the time, and I know them.

They're a good, great group of players. Great to work with them, but it's happened a few times. Then we get nervous and lose our structure. In the second half against Nottingham, with an extra player, we have to win. We have to win now.

Then we get nervous, make mistakes, and make bad decisions. We all know that when you're not calm and balanced, you don't make good decisions.

There could be many reasons, but I don't have any. Maybe with explanations, we can clarify things. But in the end, it's a huge missed chance to get closer to the middle of the pack.

After being knocked out of the FA Cup by Macclesfield, Palace's next game is on Thursday, February 19, against Zrinjski in the Europa Conference League.
